The Eagles at The AFCONs: Exciting times ahead

“We need go back to the way we play football in Nigeria; our biggest strengths are using our wingers and fullbacks to create width” those were the words of super eagles interim manager Austin Eguavoen when asked how he plans to set up the super eagles upon taking the job in the wake of Gernot Rohr’s sack. Getting the job done was never in with Rohr, he had led the team to qualification to two nations cups and a world cup. Achieved the minimum expectations in the last Afcons by reaching the last four.

The main issue with Gernot Rohr was the quality of football on display every time the eagles played and not about the results. Nigerians only demanded better football with the quality of players on display. That demand was met against the Pharaohs of Egypt. Incisive football, direct and proper wing play with Moses tormenting the Egyptians incisive finish from senior man Kelz, it was a performance that Nigerians have craved for in a long while.

This team is a reflection of Gernot Rohr’s work and we must give him credit for that. He started the process of fazing out most of the older players in the team when he took over and ushered in the making of a much younger team. Started the search for foreign born Nigerians and was instrumental in having the likes of Joseph Aribo, Maduka Okoye, Leon Balogun, Williams Trost-Ekong but to mention a few.

With what was on show on Tuesday, the belief the eagles can fly all the way in Cameroon has been risen among fans, and there will be confidence oozing out of those player. There also seems to be a trust in the manager as highlighted by Simon Moses who acknowledged the game against Egypt was the best game he's played for the Eagles and that was due to the freedom given to him by the coach.

Tomorrow, the nation will be expecting the team to cruise to the next round of the competition, and with the likes of Oshimhen, Emmanuel Dennis and Ademola Lookman, Michael Olise, Eberechi Eze potentially joining this team, the near future looks extremely exciting for the eagles.
